HR 987 Passes PA House of Representatives

On October 5, 2010, House Resolution 987 passed in the PA House of Representatives! Rep. Mark Longietti (D-Mercer Co.) the primary sponsor was able to craft a version that received unanimous support. The study urges the State Board of Education with PDE to conduct a study of school libraries, examining such components as staffing, budgets, collections, instruction on information use and research to students, etc. It urges that these elements be evaluated in relation to student and community circumstances or differences. As the Pa. School Librarians Assn begins to think about how to assist in the development of survey questions, what do you think are the important questions that need to be asked and data collected?

I already rec'd a comment from a librarian who says, "Although I know the new study is probably still in the planning phases do you think a question could be added regarding how many school districts have been putting classroom teachers into a vacated library position and how that might be impacting information literacy education?

As a certified elementary librarian who has been actively interviewing for a school librarian position I'm alarmed at the number of school districts who move classroom teachers into libraries on emergency certificates, thinking that asking them to take the Praxis exam fulfills their need for a school librarian."
