William Lin What Chile Can Teach Us About Vouchers

As our own General Assembly debates the merits of school vouchers, it is important to remember that the United States is far from being a pioneer in such policies.

In Chile, a nation-wide system of vouchers and state support for private schools has been in place for decades. State subsidization of private schooling is so extensive that an entire class of state-funded private schools has emerged. Chilean policies have wholeheartedly embraced the principle that market forces and "school…

Ian Moran Education Voters Video Contest - DEADLINE 10/30

Gov. Corbett and the state legislature recently passed a budget containing nearly $1 BILLION in cuts to our public schools!  This is already having a negative impact on students and communities throughout the state.  We need to tell our (or the) story of how these cuts are hurting our communities and why public education is so critical to the success of the entire state.

Education Voters Institute of Pennsylvania (EVI) is conducting a video project to…

Len Rieser What makes a leader?

If improving schools is, as we’re told, all about “leadership,” recent events in Philadelphia pose some questions about what that quality really is.  A couple of days ago, our now-ex-Superintendent, Dr. Arlene Ackerman, wrote that the District had gained “national recognition” for the progress that it had made on her watch.  But yesterday, as charges and counter-charges over her tenure escalated, she changed her…

Len Rieser Lost in (non)translation: ELC files a complaint on behalf of an immigrant family

Folks who work with immigrant and refugee families may be interested in a complaint filed by the Education Law Center this month with the federal Office for Civil Rights.  A high school in northern PA accused a student of misconduct, then urged his non-English-speaking parents to sign a "waiver of expulsion hearing" form.  The form was written in extremely complicated legalese and was entirely in English.  School staff did not translate the form, but told the parents (also in English) that it… Continue

Brett Schaeffer House Education Committee Hearing on School Choice Bills

The House Education Committee is hosting a hearing on Wednesday, June 22 to discuss various bills regarding charter schools, school vouchers, and the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Each piece of legislation is significant and deals with the fundamental structure of Pennsylvania's public education system. These massive bills are on the verge of being fast-tracked through the legislature without debate or transparency  (remember the pay raise?) and instead tucked…

Jahlil Irvin Countdown of My Top Ten Guilty Pleasures

Over the last year I have developed a few addictions, harmless ones that I can’t seem to shake. I know everyone has their own guilty pleasures so I just wanted to come forth and show mine.

10. Gummy Bears. I don’t know where the obsession started but I can’t seem to get enough of these things. They are so chewy and they eliminated chocolate from my list of guilty pleasures. They are so delicious that I find myself eating…

Jahlil Irvin Exhibition Night

When I first heard we were having an Exhibition Night for sophomores I was half excited and half confused. I knew it was a big thing at our school because the sophomore class last year would always talk about it, but I didn’t know what actually went on. Now I know that our Exhibition Night project is a project about who we are, where we are going and how we are planning to get there. It’s a PowerPoint featuring slides about our grades and plans for high school, our dream college and our…

Jahlil Irvin Art Inspired by Life

So, I’ve wanted to become more involved in art. Maybe it’s because I no longer take the art class in school or the fact that I haven’t done any artwork in about two in a half months. I look at art and want to create my own art. In class last semester I learned about numerous art techniques including: Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Photorealism. Yet, I still could not find my inspiration for my next piece. I struggled to figure out what I was going to do… Continue

Joan Duvall Flynn This Nominee for Sec of Ed. is for vouchers

The whole purpose of the "vouchers" proposal  is to sell children as "a vast new market" .  S B 1,the Piccola proposal is in support of total privatization of unregulated school - opened by anyone with not rules or protections for children.  No accountability for the use of public funds. And they have presented a long parade of Black children before the Senate Education Committe to put a Black face on voucher. The purpose of vouchers is to sell children to private business - with no… Continue

Joan Duvall Flynn NAACP

I am not sure where the nominee lives.  Not PA.

His views onn property tax bothered me.  Where does he think the money will come from if not property tax.  He cannot support these cuts and pretend that he does not expect property tax increase.  Chester proposed cuts: $20 million and it is suggested that they cannot make payroll right now.Allentown proposed cuts $15 million.  Erie cuts, over $11 million.  The whole notion of voucher - totally private system - sell children to the…
