How do you deal with the added supplies on your child's school supplies list?

Interesting story from yesterday's New York Times. Not entirely a new phenomenon -- parents have been picking up the tab for extra supplies for some time now -- but this seems like the practice has become institutionalized. What are people experiencing in their schools? Do parents now just assume they'll foot the bill for lightbulbs?See More

Thanks for passing along that bill- I posted it on FB! I don't usually miss those things but I missed that one.

I went to GWU.. It was back when George Washington was the president! LOL! Thurston was the only dorm back then- just kidding. I did really go to GW though. Are you planning on going to law school? I'm trying to imagine what brought you to an internship at ELC. That's something that if I could go back in time and do it all over again, I'd want to do: intern, and at places like the ELC. Actually, I'd like to intern there now :-)

My bad- I always assume that everyone has kids b/c I do! There is certainly lots of legal drama to follow at LMSD- for me the most unfortunate part of this is that it takes the (very sped-friendly and supportive)superintendant's time away from making awesome radical changes for our kids b/c he is so weighed down w/ legal matters. I wish they would delete everyone involved with special ed between him and the principals and start fresh with staff who actually care about kids and care about learning about their actual needs. They can take the school board with them as well- everyone except Melissa Gilbert. All arrogant attitudes O-U-T!!

We have an amazing new principal now and that has also radically changed the support that our kids receive- there is now appropriate training for all staff, and respect for parents who advocate, and transparency/communication. No more secrets! This principal, like the sup't, considers our kids to be every bit as worthy as the typical kids, and not in name only. The ignorance and arrogance are almost gone and there are big changes in store for the fall- I am SO excited!!!

Being an intern there must be so exciting! I assume that you are in law school or a recent grad- is that correct?

Hi and thank you. I wish I didn't have that story to tell- or others- but it is important to tell. I see that we live in the same town- do your kids go to BHES also?
