A new option for dealing with harassment of students who are (or are viewed as ) LGBT

Started this discussion. Last reply by LT Tierney Oct 27, 2011. 1 Reply

Harassment of students who are, or are viewed as, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (LGBT) is common -- but hard to deal with.  So it's good news that the US Department of Education (USDOE) has…Continue

Should students be punished for off-campus speech?

J.L. and J.S., two Pennsylvania students (high school senior and age 14, respectively), were not fond (to put it mildly) of their principals.  J.L. created a MySpace page on which he described his as…Continue

As we approach the end of the school year, I'm wondering whether people have seen any examples this year of improvements in programs and services for English language learners.  The new funding…Continue

What makes a leader?

If improving schools is, as we’re told, all about “leadership,” recent events in Philadelphia pose some questions about what that quality really is.  A couple of days ago, our now-ex-Superintendent, Dr. Arlene Ackerman, wrote that the District had gained “national recognition” for the progress that it had made on her watch.  But yesterday, as charges and counter-charges over her tenure escalated, she changed her message…See More

Lost in (non)translation: ELC files a complaint on behalf of an immigrant family

Folks who work with immigrant and refugee families may be interested in a complaint filed by the Education Law Center this month with the federal Office for Civil Rights.  A high school in northern PA accused a student of misconduct, then urged his non-English-speaking parents to sign a "waiver of expulsion hearing" form.  The form was written in extremely complicated legalese and was entirely in English.  School staff did not translate the form, but told the parents (also in English) that it…See More

What's happening with ELLs?

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 11:19am 3 Comments

In the current hubbub of budget-cutting, voucher-ing, and new-administration-ing in Harrisburg, it's hard to find much information about what's happening with English language learners.  But here are the results of a little sleuthing on my part; I hope others will be able to comment and add.  (Also, the ELL Task Force is meeting to discuss these and other things on March 11 in King of Prussia -- let me know if you'd like details.)
