Back to School 2011!

The beginning of the school year is just around the corner.  We're interested to hear from you as to what changes your schools have had to make due to the severe budget cuts most districts suffered.  Are the class sizes bigger? Did art class get cut? Are there fewer aides in the classrooms?  What are you noticing? The Education Law Center wants to remind you that budgets may have changed, but your legal rights have not. …See More

I think the Interbranch Commission questioning by the of the then Secretary of Education during the hearings, and then their observations in the report are useful in this discussion- as the Commission could not find a coherent understanding or plan by Education regarding their obligtations or collaborative efforts with Juvenile Justice or on behalf of children with severe behavioral needs. That is my impression talking with families who find the school's response is too often blame and shame, and the school's analysis of a student's needs rarely goes beyond that the student needs to stop slacking and manipualating- it is still a John or Jane will do this and that, never the school will do this ....unless it is the school will respond with an escalating level of punishment.
