Hi David,

Belmont Hills has amazing anti-bullying programs and strategy and I have to say it's better than the other five elementary schools in the district. There is a strong commitment there to respect differences and diversity and when there are occurrences they are dealt with immediately and in a great way- a teaching way.

What I have been working on is, in my opinion, a separate branch of the anti-bullying issue and that involves the high percentage of children with ASD and ADHD in the school, most of whom have social issues. For the kids w/ ASD they all need social assistance at some level in unstructured environments
such as recess- they need appropriate facilitation while attempting to navigate their environments socially. Recess aides have been trained to deal with bullying but not facilitation for these kids who tend to either wander the perimeter of the school yard or stay physically close to classmates yet not quite joining them. This is all changing for the fall as recess teachers and aides will be trained to recognize the differences between bullying and inappropriate responses of a child in the process of learning social skills, and how a teacher should facilitate appropriate interactions between children- it's very exciting and I am really looking forward to this!!

David, do you work at the ELC?
