PA School Talk

The Tredyffrin/Easttown School District is considering demoting higher paid teachers, particulary those with PhD's, from full-time to part-time..

Are any other school districts in PA considering this? I googled "school district" and "economic demotion" and only T/E comes up...

T/E has a reserve fund of about $32 million... What are school district's reserve funds reserved for? When is it appropriate to tap into them?

Also, I'm very discouraged by T/E's pay to play activity fee. Beginning next year,  high school and middle school students wishing to participate in extracurricular activites will be charge $50 per activity. Do other schools have a participation fee?

Personally, if I can't afford these fees, my son won't be participating... I don't feel I should have to apply for charity from our Township's local non-profit group...

Thanks.

Last spring, Manheim Township SD (Lancaster Co.) demoted all their school librarians from full-time to half-time with no benefits. An arbitration was held in which PSEA represented the librarians but the case was lost. You can probably find out more by contacting PSEA. I don't think this was ever covered in the media except for the original article at http://lancasteronline.com/article/local/347488_Manheim-Township-sc...

Unfortunately, there is nothing in the PA School Code or regulations that requires public schools to have librarians or even libraries.  Yet all PA prisons must employ a certified librarian and have a certain collection size. Is something wrong with this picture?

YES, there is something WRONG with this picture!!!!  I have a Master's In Library Science. . I wanted to go back and get certified as a school librarian.  My father who is a retired teacher and administrator, talked me out of it because, unfortunately, there aren't many positions available.

Ok, now I'm reading that a non-profit in the Great Valley School District is running a campaign to raise over $250,000 so that certain programs and activities will not be cut.  They are asking that each family with kids in the district contribute $1000.  Is this the way it's going to be?

Christine,

I have not heard of any demotions for the higher paid staff members in the district. I do know that in neighboring districts they are trying to downsize the amount of faculty needed in a certain content area. I know there have been rumors around our district and others nearby that schools were going to push for the pay to play fee for extracurricular sports. I am a middle school field hockey coach and I could not even imagine that rule being enforced I would not have many girls on my team at the beginning of the season, that's for sure. I couldn't believe even asking for that much money, it would clearly go toward our transportation to and from games because the amount of money that we get for new equipment would be nowhere near that much.

Tredyffrin/Eastttown passed a "Pay to Play" Activity and Sports Fee on April 23, 2012.  $50 per activity up to a total of $250.  Those who can't afford the fee have to apply for charity from a local non-profit organization.

Hempfield School District (Lancaster County) has also developed a pay-to-play program for activities (sports and music, so far).  In addition, they are now charging groups such as Scouts, science clubs and other organizations that use the school facilities after classes.  In some cases, these fees are prohibitive enough that the organization has either cancelled clubs or moved off campus.  This has a two-fold result: children whose parents work are now unable to participate because of transportation issues (not a problem when the club met after school in the school). In addition, this also creates a loss of community, as these groups are far less visible and accessible to students and families when meeting off campus.
