Investing in public education initiatives pays big dividends for the state's economic and social welfare, according to a new report from the Education Law Center and Penn State Professor Dana Mitra: Pennsylvania's Best Investment.

There's great (and incredibly timely) data on the importance of investing in public education initiatives. This new report collects the best and most recent research on the subject, including important new research from the recession.

Some key findings include:

  • During the recession, gaps in employment and earnings have increased based on race and level of educational attainment
  • During the recession, unemployment rates were 80 percent higher, on average, than expected in cities with low levels of high school and college graduates.
  • The unemployment rate was much lower and average earnings were higher for individuals who did not drop out of high school and had achieved some level of college education.

The report is available online at: www.elc-pa.org/bestinvestment.html

I thought the Education and Health section of this report had some particularly striking facts on the impact of higher levels of education on people's health and wellness, particularly the correlation between increased education levels and infant mortality in the US.

Also, I'm happy to read the WHO recognized that equitable education for children was a critical component of maximizing health benefits within societies.

It is striking. And it would be good to see continued research in that area. I think, despite attention from the WHO, the impact of equitable education is often a missing piece of the broader health care debate in the U.S.
